Purpose
Examine pre- and postinjury patterns of alcohol and illicit drug use by persons with TBI.
Methods
Descriptive information pertaining to alcohol and drug use was obtained from patients via the General Health and History Questionaire.  Information about duration of unconsciousness, mechanism of injury, blood alcohol levels was obtained from medical records.
Results
Patients showed a decline in alcohol use at intitial follow-up but showed similiar preinjury and second follow-up alcohol use patterns.  Postinjury illicit drug use fell below 10% at both follow-up intervals.
Treatment Implications
  • Carefully monitor men who are preinjury moderate and heavy users of alcohol and illicit drugs.
  • Intensify monitoring efforts in the longterm for at -risk clients.
