Type of Study Summary
Purpose To review information about the detection and management of concussion in sports
Topics
  • Discussion of second impact syndrome
  • Summary of how medical personnel should respond to an athlete who has sustained a potential concussion
  • Description of neuropsychological assessment of athletes
  • Description of Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC)
  • Summary of Return to Play Guidelines
Conclusion
  • Every athlete with concussion should be evaluated by a physician.
  • Athletes should be closely monitored after a concussion and severity and symptoms should be the determining factors to consider before the athlete is allowed to return to play.
  • Newer tools of assessment, such as balance testing, are not recommended for clinical decision-making for concussion at this time.  Further data needs to be collected before these assessments are used clinically.
  • More research is needed in this area.
