Kelly, J. P., & Rosenberg, J. H.  (1998).  The development guidelines for the management of concussion in sports.  Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, 13, 53-65.
Type of Study Summary
Purpose To describe the formal process of developing guidelines for the diagnosis and managements of concussion in sports.  Includes grading scale, sideline evaluation, and management strategies adopted as a practice parameter by the American Academy of Neurology.

Topics

  • Literature review and case reports
  • Summary of signs and symptoms of concussion
  • Example of a sideline evaluation
  • Summary of concussion grading scale
  • Recommendations for return to play

Conclusion

  • Grading scales and management guidelines for injuries of all types are well established in sports medicine.
  • Previous studies showed that coaches and trainers were overlooking subtle cognitive and behavioral changes of athletes.
  • There is no consensus or scientific data to guide the decision with regard to the question, "How many concussions are too many?"
  • Athletes showing ongoing symptoms or demonstrating neuropsychological performance deficits compared to preinjury performance on similar tests should be advised to discontinue the sport.
