Subjects

Variety of studies from 1949-1991, with multiple subject groups

Diagnosis

Brain injury (mild, moderate, severe)

Purpose

To establish clear guidelines in the recognition, management, and prevention of head injuries as related to sport concussions.

Methods

  • Explanation of the mechanisms of head injury (biomechanical) as they relate to different types of brain injury
  • Summary of recognition and management techniques
  • Summary of guidelines for return to play following concussion based on grade of concussion and prior incidence
  • Summary of five areas to target in the prevention of head injuries

Conclusion

  • Following concussion, processing and recalling of new information is impaired.
  • Athletes should consider terminating participation in sporting contests following a single concussion.
  • A universal definition of concussion needs to be adopted to allow for more accurate interpretation.
  • The training of athletic coaches, trainers, and physicians in the recognition, management, and prevention of head injuries is necessary.
  • More research is needed
