Ylvisaker, M. and Szekeres, S. (1989). Metacognitive and executive impairments in head-injured children and adults. Topics in Language Disorders, 9, 34-49.
This article discussed assessment and intervention of metacognitive and executive impairments in working with children and adults who have a head-injury. The authors list "knowledge base" and "executive system" as two important aspects of cognitive functioning. Seven areas of executive problems and communicative impairments outlined in the article include: self-awareness and goal setting, planning, self-directing/initiating, self inhibiting, self-monitoring, self-evaluating, and flexible problem solving. Assessment and intervention suggestions are provided within the areas listed above. The authors indicate a need for research in the identification of factors that would assist in the selection of appropriate candidates for metacognitive intervention.
