| This article discusses metacognitive executive thinking strategies that may help children with disorders of executive function. Children with deficits in executive skills may fail to develop adequately the requisite abilities to interact productively and effectively with the environment. In childhood, they often demonstrate a wide range of cognitive, social and academic disorders. The article states that epidemiological investigations to determine the incidence and prevalence of disorders of executive function have not yet been possible. Several factors hinder the investigation of the basic underlying developmental, neuroanatomical, psychological, and neuropsychological issues involved in disorders of executive function. Despite the lack of research and literature in this area, cognitive behavioral approaches are viewed as helpful. Many programs have been developed involving planning and problem solving to assist these children. The author states that further research regarding such factors as medication, intelligence, etiology, age of onset, and other variables is still very necessary. |
