The efficacy of coma stimulation therapy is controversial.
Researchers and medical professionals have differing opinions
on the effectiveness of sensory stimulation.  Listed below are 
the advantages and disadvantages to implementing a coma
stimulation program.

Advantages

  May give the family hope

  Allows the family to take an active role in the treatment process

  May decrease the distress of the family

  May help decrease the family's feelings of loss, anger, and denial

  May shorten duration of coma
 

Disadvantages

  May raise false hopes

  May reinforce denial of patient's deficits

  May create additional emotional/financial stress within the family

  Lack of specific procedures to follow for coma stimulation treatment

  No set criteria for determining the frequency, intensity, type, and duration for stimulation

  Overstimulation may prolong vegetative state
