A variety of scales/charts are used when assessing individuals who have sustained a traumatic brain injury.  The type of assessment procedures will vary depending upon whether the patient is in the initial or final stages of coma.  The following scales/charts are commonly used in the assessment process.
 

Glascow Coma Scale

  •  Measures the patients response to external stimuli (pain, touch, speech)

    Ranchos Levels of Cognitive Functioning

  •  Measures cognitive functioning

    Galveston Orientation and Amnesia Test (GOAT) Adult version
    Children's Orientation and Amnesia Test (COAT)

  • Measures early recovery of memory and orientation to person, place, and time
  • Determines termination of Post-Traumatic Amnesia (the time between injury and recovery of continuous memory for a 24-hour period)
