A variety of scales/charts
are used when assessing individuals who have sustained a traumatic brain
injury. The type of assessment procedures will vary depending upon
whether the patient is in the initial or final stages of coma. The
following scales/charts are commonly used in the assessment process.
Glascow
Coma Scale
Measures the patients
response to external stimuli (pain, touch, speech)
Ranchos
Levels of Cognitive Functioning
Measures cognitive functioning
Galveston
Orientation and Amnesia Test (GOAT) Adult version
Children's
Orientation and Amnesia Test (COAT)
Measures early recovery of memory
and orientation to person, place, and time
Determines termination of Post-Traumatic
Amnesia (the time between injury and recovery of continuous memory for
a 24-hour period)
